Pomeranian Hypoglycemia or Low Blood Sugar, is a disorder that occurs mainly in small breeds of puppies. It is usually confined to about 6 to 12 weeks of age. It can occur without warning. If is often precipitated by stress or missed meals. Stress can be a new home, shipping, exhaustion by too much play or overhandling, chills or a digestive upset. Any of these drains the energy of a tiny Puppy and can bring on the symptoms.

Hypoglycemia is a real danger to small Puppies. Watch for listlessness and depression, or walking like it is drunk. This is a muscular weakness and will be followed by tremors, convulsions, coma and death. If it appears weak, wobbly or jerky, then you must act fast. If the puppy is still awake then give it Nutrical or Karo Syrup by mouth. I am NEVER without these pro ducts. Nutrical comes in a tube like toothpaste and can be purchased at your vets or a pet store like PetsMart or Petco. Put about a half inch ribbon of it on your finer and put it his mouth. The nutrients will immediately dissolve and go to the bloodstream even if he does not swallow it all. You should see results within a few minutes. If there is no results within 30 minutes or the Puppy is comatose, then call your vet immediately.

Prevent Hypoglycenia from happening by making sure the Puppy gets enough rest by limiting play time to 20 minutes or so. Keep the Puppy

warm. He is a house dog and should not be living outdoors or be outdoors for long periods of time. Feed the Puppy a high quality diet. Make sure the Puppy is eating. Just because food is there doesn’t mean he is eating it. Keep dry food and water available at all times. You can also give the Puppy some Nutrical or Karo Syrup morning and night for the first week or so. Too much will cause it to have loose stools, so don’t over do it. But they love it and will lick it off your finger and beg for more.

I feed a Puppy food that is high in protein and is small bite. Their little jaws can’t handle the big pieces that some of the foods have. I like a 26-28% protein until they are a year old. I prefer Science Diet or Purina as they do not get gas and do have a firm stool so it is not hard to clean up after.

The Pomeranian breed of canines was originated in Pomerania, an area now considered part of northern Germany and Poland. This Nordic breed originally weighed between 20 and 30 pounds, has both herding and sledding abilities, and is still characterized by its harsh double coat. Queen Victoria is credited with its miniaturization and popularization during her reign of England. Although their former reputation is for favoring a particular person in the household, today’s Pomeranian’s are truly gregarious. The are pleased to become a member of your family and happy to serve as your best companion. The modern Pomeranian is a compact, short-backed, active toy dog. He has a soft, dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured outer coat. His signature is a heavily plumed tail that is set high and lies flat on his back. He is alert in character, exhibits intelligence, is buoyant in deportment, and is inquisitive by nature. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. The average weight of the Pomeranian is from 3 to 7 pounds, with the ideal weight for the show specimen being 4 to 6 pounds. He is medium-boned and feels sturdy. The eyes are dark, bright, medium in size and almond shaped. The coat is abundant from the neck and fore part of the shoulders and chest, forming a frill which extends over the shoulders and chest. The head and leg coat is tightly packed and shorter in length than that of the body. The front legs and back thighs are well feathered in coat. He is a true ball of fur!!

Pomeranian Puppies are excellent companions for the young and old alike. However, they should be supervised with very small children as they are easily hurt. Pomeranian Puppies are beautiful little balls of fur that will do anything to please you. They are energetic and will play if you ask or they can be little lap rugs and snuggle. Their territorial nature and loyalty will alert you to any unusual disturbance or intruders to your home. Their social nature makes it easy to own more than one. The Pomeranian is an extrovert that exhibits great intelligence and spirit. This makes him a great companion dog as well as a competitive show dog.

The Pyrenees dogs take their name from the mountain range in southwestern Europe. They have long been used as guardian of the flocks. In the United States they are called Great Pyrenees. In the United Kingdom and on the continent of Europe, they are known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. In their native France, the are Le Chien de Montagne des Pyrenees. Whatever the name, it is a beautiful white dog with a decided elegance which for centuries has been the working associate of peasant shepherds high on the mountain slopes. The dog was “discovered” by French nobility in the seventeenth century and elevated to the status of court dog of France. These dogs are believed to have migrated into Europe from Asia Minor, moving westward and leaving kin in all the prominent mountain valleys of Europe. These later developed individual characteristics in the seclusion of their own environment and came to be known as the Maremma, Kuvasz, Polish Tatra, Akbash, Slovakian Chuvach, and others.

Great Pyrenees are at heart territorial guard dogs and members of the great family of Livestock Guardian Dogs or LGD’s. As such, they share with them certain strong characteristics. They are guard dogs by instinct, not by training. Their basic personality is different from most breeds, since most breeds were bred to take commands from people, while Great Pyrenees were bred to work naturally from their ancient instincts. A Great Pyrenees is an intelligent, sometimes willful animal. They have minds of their own and are not easily obedience trained. Things that you consider important may not be the same things your Pyr considers important at that moment. Great Pyrenees must be confined in a well fenced area or they will exercise their powerful instinct to establish and patrol a LARGE territory. They are a guard dog and as such cannot be expected to welcome uninvited guests onto your property. They should accept anyone whom YOU invite into your home. They are not “attack” dogs but can be very intimidating to the surprised visitor. It is an owner’s obligation to maintain a Great Pyrenees so that his guarding instincts can be exercised in a responsible manner. Like all livestock guardian breeds, Great Pyrenees are barkers, especially at night. The amount of barking varies from individual to individual, but the instinct is there.

The Great Pyrenees is nocturnal. It works well in combination with its shepherd owners and companion herding and guarding dogs with the livestock accompanying this group. It can be trusted with small, young and helpless animals of any kind, but it has to be watched as a young pup with some supervision and occasional correction required as it usually take a pup 18 months to become an effective livestock guardian dog. It is one of the most interesting qualities of a Great Pyrenees–the absolute intolerance of all predators (including strange dogs, animals, and people), coupled with extraordinary patience and kindness to stock. They will give their own life to guard and protect their charges. The breed works in many settings and under many circumstances. This is a dog that can live on a farm, usually in the proximity of the farmyard and ranch house. He is part pet and part guard dog. He takes care of the farm or ranch, the family and the stock that is usually pastured close to the house. We also find Great Pyrenees working on large ranches pastured far from the living quarters. The breed performs admirably in any of these situations.
